American Cyril Douglas Shane was born in 1922 and first recorded as a singer on the UK Columbia label label in the late 1930s providing vocals for a number of British Dance Bands including those of Jimmy Leach, Paul Fenoulhet and Billy Thorburn as well as having many releases under his own name.

When his singing career ended, he started a music publishing business and Cyril Shane Music Limited is still an active company incorporated on 21 February 1968 with the registered office located in London, Greater London. Cyril Shane Music Limited has been running for 51 years, although Cyril himself passed away in 2014 and the business is now run by his son.

Planet records first appeared in mid-1951 and were pressed by Decca. There seem to be at least three series: A 1000- series which appears to be Hebrew material; A 2000- series and an E-1000- series.

the label design and colour is the same for all three series, but I haven't seen a 2000 example to confirm this.

In 1954, Planet records made a bid to provide records exclusively for Woolworths, but lost out to Oriole, whose Embassy records became the Woolworth brand. It is said that the bids were evenly matched, but that Oriole allegedly won the franchise mainly based on the fact that their Studios were only a few yards from Woolworth's London HQ.

Soon after this, Planet records ceased.
