Here's another strong effort from Italian multi-reedman/composer Alberto Pinton and his fine ensemble. With this release, the band frames a good portion of these works upon linearly devised choruses atop rhythmically inclined movements. Trumpeter Kyle Gregory is a near perfect foil for Pinton, as they interweave regal statements and penetrating lines via an evolutionary process. At times, the quartet renders elements of free bop with a few fleeting nods to sax great Ornette Coleman through hard-edged overtures and soul-drenched exchanges.
The band pursues a hodgepodge of contrasting themes and thought-provoking notions to complement a smattering of bluesy dreamscapes. The artists elicit lucid imagery on "One Of A Kind," where Pinton's baritone sax work acts as a lead-in for a series of counterbalancing themes as they conjure up notions of reflection and afterthought via emotively enacted motifs.
Besides the somewhat heady implications, the musicians attain a happy medium: one that melds austerity with a festive outlook. No doubt, Pinton demonstrates an acute ability for constructing dense arrangements amid an airy, loose groove-type of vibe. ~ Glenn Astarita
