Description

An expressive oil abstract painting on thick card by the British artist Margaret Hole. Label with biographical details to the reverse. Inscribed on the reverse.

Condition

Overall in good condition, with slight creasing to the corners and small surface marks. Small area of paint loss to the lower right-hand corner. Inspection under UV light shows no signs of restoration.

Biography

Margaret O. Hole was born in 1919. As a student after the war at the Central School of Art and Design, she had a studied textile design but changed to painting upon realizing her true passion. For some years Hole worked as a portrait painter, exhibiting at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of Portrait Painters, the Paris Salon and various other galleries.

Hole's main inspiration from childhood was in botany and astronomy. As her career progressed the bulk of her paintings became more abstracted. She focused her practice on variations of natural forms such as plants, fungi and shells.

Hole studies and became one of the early practitioners of Art Therapy, working in mental hospitals and prisons. A number of her paintings were acquired recently by the Bethlem Museum of the Mind.
