General Anthony Clement ''Nuts'' McAuliffe [1898 1975] was a United States Army general who commanded the 101st Airborne division troops defending the Belgium town of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. On December 16, 1944, German forces launched their largest offensive of the war on the Western Front with the goal to capture the Belgium port of Antwerp. During their attack German forces needed to pass thru the town of Bastogne which was defended by the 101st Airborne Division. On December 21, General McAuliffe found his command completely surrounded and greatly outnumbered by German ground troops. The following morning on December 22, a German surrender party carrying a white flag approached with a surrender ultimatum which allowed American troops two hours to surrender, or German forces would annihilate them with heavy artillery. Upon first reading the letter general McAuliffe believed the Germans wanted to surrender to him but after realizing his mistake he laughed and said ''Us surrender, Aw, Nuts!''. After some discussion with his staff the following reply was taken to the German commander. To the German Commander, ''Nuts'', The American Commander. Listed for auction is a stunning framed display which contains the authenticated autograph of General Anthony McAuliffe. The autograph is signed on a card ''A.C. McAuliffe'' in blue pen and the card measures 5.00 x 3.00 inches and is in fine condition. The autograph has been authenticated by JSA James Spence Authentication and will be accompanied with the above Letter of Authenticity. The display is centered around a great iconic image of general McAuliffe with other military officers holding a sign with the Bastogne town name. Mounted below the photograph is the autograph as described above and mounted below is a professionally engraved metal descriptive plaque which reads as follows, ''General Anthony ''Nuts'' McAuliffe July 2, 1898 - August 11, 1975. McAuliffe was a senior United States Army Officer who earned fame as the acting commander of the U.S. 101st airborne division troops defending the town of Bastogne, Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. On December 22, 1944, General McAuliffe while completely surrounded by German forces received a communication from the German Commander which read in short ''To the U.S.A. Commander of the encircled town of Bastogne, the fortune of war is changing. This time the U.S.A. forces in and around Bastogne have been encircled by strong German armored units. There is only one possibility to save the encircled troops from total annihilation: that is the honorable surrender of the encircled town!'' General McAuliffe responded as follows, ''To the German Commander, ''NUTS'', the American Commander''. The last items mounted within the display are two [reproduction] 101st Screaming Eagles cloth patches. The display has been professionally assembled in all acid free material with great attention to detail as follows.
