This is one of a number of antique original sepia photographs by Frank H. Nowell the famous American photographer 1864-1950 of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Very interesting if you Google him. They are all of Nome, Alaska from about 1900 - 1910 and are gold mining related as well as some Native Eskimo people going about their normal everyday life.

This one is of the KLONDIKE Gold Rush.

Caption says:

Nowell #122.

Thawer & Shaft No. 1 On Homstake Claim Imnachuk River 18 Ft. to Bedrock 34.00 Pan Sep 23.

Interesting photo with the 4 miners and the steam boiler which has a tube attached to it going to the top of the mining shaft and then off at a right angle down the shaft. The clue is in the first word.... THAWER ... I was not aware that the gold rich seams were frozen until recently whilst watching the modern day GOLD MINERS on TV ... Parker Schnabel - Tony Beets  - Rick Ness ...it was only really then I was amazed to see the ground still frozen... so you can imagine these old 1903 gold miners thinking on their feet and using boiling water to thaw the gold rich gravel seams out and hoist it back to the top into their heaps for summer sluicing.

Some of the modern mine workers on television with their antics and lack of common sense would I am sure have the original Gold Rush miners laughing !

It measures approx. 9 and 1/2 inches x 7 and 1/2 inches.

I am selling the photographs individually and will of course combine postage for you so no matter how many you buy on the same invoice you will be charged only once for shipping - postage.

Most of them are captioned along the bottom of the photograph with his name as well as a number.

You will see I have my name across the photographs to stop people just copying them. Be assured these are original antique sepia photographs. They have no writing on the backs at all. Some of the photos have a silvery look about them on their edges when turned into the light angles.

Most of them are 9 and 3/4 inches x 7 and 3/4 inches and the corners do have slight angled line marks where they were in the original black paper album which I took them from.
