SUPERB EARLY BASLE INCUNABLE IN LATE GOTHIC BINDING
FROM THE MONASTERY GERODE IN EICHSFELD (THURINGIA) - 1476
AUTHOR
Rainerius de Pisis (1281?-1351)
Edited and published by Jacobus Florentinus.
Second part from two volumes.
TITLE
Pantheologia, sive Summa universae theologiae
PRINTER
Berthold Ruppel, Basle, not after 1476.
Without printing place and colophon. The Erfurt copy has an owner's note from 1477 and the BSB copy from 1476, which means that today the printing date "not after 1476" is considered to have been saved.
DESCRIPTION
Third edition of the oldest theological encyclopedia. “Although the author was Italian, it is noticeable that of the six editions printed in the 15th-century, the first five appeared in Germany, suggesting that the manuscripts quickly found their way to Nuremberg, where it is quite possible that the celebrated humanist, physician and bibliophile Hartmann Schedel had something to do with seeing the formidable tomes into print.” (Notes on the bibliography of Rainerius de Pisis, Rhodes, p. 238).
The first edition were published about one year before at Johann Sensenschmidt and Heinrich Kefer in Nuremberg on April 8 1473.
The Pantheologia attributed by Rainer of Pisa is a complete compilation of the entire theological knowledge of the time in dictionary form. The offered second part contains the letters L-Z.
Here with magnificent book decoration.
