From the first of a three year run of "Bigs". issues.
So titled because the cards are the physical size of the Topps sets from 1952 to 1956. The horizontal design and front/back formats are obviously derivative of the 1956 Topps style.

The 1988 set was a very popular mid year release that was issued in three 88 card series.
The fragile nature of the glossy thin card stock and the relative lack of proper holders for these larger cards means it is now a challenge to find top grade singles.
