Being offered is an unused copy of D. Albert Soeffing's 1988, out-of-print, classic book SILVER MEDALLION FLATWARE that is actually signed by the author the author, this is the foremost guide to American solid silver medallion flatware, containing superb photographs of the medallion flatware patterns and detailed descriptions of the makers, patterns and processes used to create these patterns. A must-have for every collector!  Also, listen to Soeffing speak about American medallion silver, Phases I and II, on seller's website.

Soeffing is an esteemed researcher of 19th Century American silver and contributed a significant amount of information to 'Silver in America: 1840-1940 A Century of Splendor' and has written numerous articles for Silver Magazine, The Magazine Antiques as well as other magazines.

INFORMATION FROM THE DUST JACKET COVER.............. "America had a love affair with medallion-patterned silver flatware in the nineteenth century beginning in the 1860s to about 1875 and again in the 1880s until about 1910. With the rise of interest in American craftsmanship today's collectors are once again discovering the vast treasure trove of medallion beauty created by of the preeminent silversmiths in our country's history".

Here for the first time in a single volume, D. Albert Soeffing has collected all the most important examples of silver medallion flatware. Over fifty photographs lavishly reproduced in duotone process illustrate thirty-one different medallion patterns by twenty-two American silversmiths as well as pieces by unknown "naive" artisans. Wherever it is certain that maker's marks appeared on medallion pieces, they are illustrated. In addition to a description, size, date, and other information identifying each piece, Soeffing includes lively stories about the history of many silversmithing firms, especially as they relate to the development of medallions as an art form. There are many fascinating revelations in his text.

Starting with the first medallion pattern to be granted a patent, Soeffing outlines the history of medallion patterns in his introduction. He goes on to describe manufacturing processes and techniques, medallion design and medallion identification. His prefatory sections conclude with a guide to appraisal factors, invaluable to both the novice and the experienced collector. What follows is a handsome catalog section with photographs and text about each attributed pattern.

The Appendix includes reproductions of four major original design patent letters with reproductions of the designers' actual sketches-as well as a reprint of Soeffing's 'Silver Magazine' magazine article on how he went about attributing a medallion pattern to its elusive maker. Whether you are a serious silver or flatware collector, have a keen interest in silver or whether you just love beautiful decorative art, this is a book you will want and keep and reference over and over again. This would be a great gift for the Silver lover on your list.

D. Albert Soeffing's primary interest lies in American Victorian silver of the 1840-1870 period. He was raised in Rochester, New York, and holds a B.A. in history from St. John Fisher College, as well as an M.A. in history from Fordham University.
