The book includes excerpts from two hard-to-find vintage publications: Southwest Louisiana Biographical and Historical, edited by William Henry Perrin and originally published by the Gulf Publishing Company in 1891, and Louisiana, a Guide to the State, compiled by Workers of the Writers' Program of the WPA in 1941.
In addition to the usual data found in county histories -- local government, churches, schools, newspapers, topography, railroads, agriculture, industries, towns, bench and bar, physicians, etc., this book includes names of many early settlers with interesting reminiscences of some of them, sections on Creoles and Indians, and a discussion on how the parish was once the Attakapas Country and later the county of Opelousas.
The book includes the names of privates as well as officers who served in the Confederate Army. Included is a list showing the original organization of the Opelousas guards, Company F, 8th Regiment, Louisiana Volunteers.
