Harvey Weir Cook [1892 1943] was an American fighter ace in World War I, a pioneering aviator and a leading figure in the development of aviation in the United States. Cook served as an ambulance driver in France upon the out-break of World War I and upon the entrance of the United States he enlisted in the aviation section of the Army Signal Corps. After fighter training, he was assigned to Captain Eddie Rickenbacker's famous ''Hat in the Ring'' 94th Aero Squadron. Cook was considered incredibly aggressive in combat and was twice cited for singly attacking formations of multiple German fighters. Cook was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster, achieved [7] seven aerial victories and served as the Commanding Officer of the 147th Aero Squadron. After the war he helped form the U.S. Army's Air Mail Service, was one of the first transcontinental pilots and flew as a race pilot. Cook resigned his commission in 1928 but continued his service with the Indiana National Guard and during this period made numerous contributions to the civilian aviation industry which included bringing Indianapolis its first principal airport, Indianapolis Municipal Airport which opened in 1931 and he served as the first airport manager. Cook was involved in the development of the first dive bombing sight for the U.S. Army and was part of the group of officers along with General Billy Smith fighting for more recognition of the potential of fighter aircraft. Upon the outbreak of World War II Cook was back in uniform in the rank of colonel and was assigned as the commander of air bases in New Caledonia. On March 24, 1943, Cook was killed in an airplane crash while training pilots for combat. In his honor, the Indianapolis Municipal Airport was renamed Weir Cook and held that name until 1976. Listed for auction is the exceedingly rare autograph of Harvey Weir Cook signed on a air mail envelope.
