The Saint James crucifix originated at the time of the Crusades. It is referred to as the cross of a warrior due to its resemblance to a sword thus symbolic of taking up the sword for the name of Christ. The scallop shell is also the traditional emblem of St. James and is popular on the Way of St. James (traveling to the apostle's shrine in Santiago de Compostela in Galicia)
