The model was first shown to the general public in February 1936 at the Berlin Auto Show (IAMA), the main theme of which was the 50th anniversary of motor transport. However, serial production had begun a few months earlier, as had the development of military variants such as the VG and VL. At the time of the premiere, the car was already offered in 6 body styles. In addition, the client had the opportunity to buy only the chassis and then equip it with an exclusive body from specialized workshops. Nevertheless, at the exhibition itself, the car was presented without a rear bumper and wing lamps. Despite this, in March, the production of the car reached about 1900 copies per month. In September, this shortage of bumpers and side lights was corrected. At the same time, a version appeared in the back of a van (German Lieferwagen) with wider wheels and tires. A feature of the cars of the first year of production was the Mercedes star, which was placed not above the grill, but on it itself. This was done due to the fact that the statuette in the form of a sign previously covered the hole for pouring water, which was now carried under the hood. Nevertheless, a year later, in 1937, the Mercedes star again returned to its rightful place, and the radiator grill from the curved outward became completely horizontal. From 1936 to 1938, and also between 1947-1953, the car was the best-selling Mercedes-Benz car. The car is most often referred to as the Mercedes-Benz W136, which corresponds to the serial number of this model, but in 1936 it was introduced to the public as the Mercedes-Benz 170V. Convertible A (2-seater), Cabriolet B (4-seater) and sedan were built on the basis of W136. Over time, in the B Convertible, a soft top upgrade made it possible to remove the metal pillar between the front and rear side windows. In taxi versions, the upper awning was slightly raised for the convenience of passengers in high headdresses. During the off-road sports racing season 1936-1937 (held under the tutelage of SS to train drivers for off-road driving), Mercedes-Benz introduced a special version 170 VR (short for Vorne Roadster). Between 1936 and 1938, police versions of the Kubelwagen were built with the same footrest as the civilian version. From November 1938, military kübelwagens began to be produced, which were noticeably different from the police. In 1938, civilian versions received a number of technical improvements, including a coolant heating system, noise reduction, air filtration, and an increased fuel tank from 33 to 43 liters. But the only relatively surviving assembly line was just for the 170th. Due to the lack of electricity and workers, the Allied occupying forces allowed Mercedes to produce cars again only towards the end of 1945. In 1946, production of the 170V began again in pickup, flatbed truck, police car and ambulance (Krankenwagen) versions. Only in 1947 did sedan versions, convertibles A and B, and OTP (Open Tourer Police) versions appear again. However, most of the newly produced ones were sent to the administrative needs of the occupation administration.

Most of the produced and surviving cars had a two or four-door limousine body (the variety of bodies of this type offered for the 170V in the 30s was very large). In the postwar years, the car continued to improve. Since 1949, the line of versions for the car has increased with versions D (Diesel, which did not have time to go into production due to the war) and S (with an independent front spring suspension). In 1950, the cars received an improved braking system, enlarged seats, an increased passenger compartment and improved engines (gasoline - 45 hp, diesel - 40 hp). Also, there was a modification Va (German: Vorne Abdeckung, translated as "trunk"). In addition, the company was helped by the municipality of Copenhagen, who ordered a hundred taxis for the Danish taxi company. In 1952, the Vb was released with a larger rear track and an increased windshield height. In 1952, the W191 model appeared - a larger one, and with updated diesel engines. During production from 1947 to 1952, 83,190 units of the W136 series were produced . The car was produced until 1955 .
