Please take time to view the extra 22 photographs below the description.

This is an antique silver Holy Communion chalice goblet of fairly plain style with a large knop in the stem as well as a flower sort of design foot... with a really fine design on the very foot rim edge.

It has an engraved Cross on the side with the initials INRI above on a small scroll...typical of Christian symbol.

The flower sort of shape base comes up to the stem part with 6 facets then a stem of 6 sides then the larger 8 sided knop in the middle and then a short bit of 6 dies once again to the rounded V shaped bowl.

The top 6 sided facet section has been squashed here... its had something heavy on top which has made is SQUASH in here a little. 3 of the 6 corners are dented with whatever was on it. ( this is the only issue to the chalice

The bowl still has quite a lot of the gilding in it....partial remains on the outside too in places.

I do NOT clean any of the items I buy and sell nor actually any items I collect myself as I leave well alone with the years of patina they have got on them when I buy them. This chalice is the same, some areas look cleaned and polished and other areas do not. It has the gilding remaining in places.

It has a mark stamped on the side of the chalice top and the same one on the base.... this is a DOLPHIN which if my research on google has been correct its Netherlands 1859-1893. The dolphin is not in a triangle ! It means the silver is .833 purity.

More Importantly it is also marked on the bottom with a set of hallmarks I have been unable to fully identify..... they LOOK Belgian ...with a double headed eagle with date 1620 below for Liege and then a makers mark PF and another which looks like two VV one one top of the other which clearly I cannot write here as their is nothing on my keyboard like it.....apart from XX but you have to look at that as though it is all joined up... two V's on top of one another opposite way around...  so you will NEED to view the photographs of it.

During this time Belgium was part of the Burgundian Territories and they can sometimes be known as Netherlandish Chalices.

Dutch Republic and Spanish Netherlands is all in this area which then became Belgium.

With the all important assayers ZIG-ZAG mark below indicating it is silver.

So its with Burgundian hallmarks here indicating a date 1620 at Liege and the Dolphin marks of the Netherlands 1859-1893 when it was later tested for purity.

I do NOT know enough about the subject but I do find it fascinating.

So Belgium 1620 on the bottom of this chalice ....WOW that is pretty cool ...and if we could identify the other 2 marks we may be a little closer to getting a better idea of what it is all about.

This could be a really important silversmith of the period making it a museum quality Chalice !

If anyone can IDENTIFY the hallmarks for me better I will be most grateful.

I have added 22 photographs to the end of this listing to show all the details of this piece so please take the time to view them all.

It is in collectable condition with normal signs of age and use wear. The stem of the chalice is bent slightly where it looks like it's been crushed as already described....plus it needs a polish.

It measures approx. 7 and 1/2 inches tall and approx. 5 and 1/2 inches in diameter on the base x 4 inch dia. at the top rim...and it weighs approx.....396 grams.

Interestingly if you google search similar items you will find a really nice Netherlandish chalice c1520 from Antwerp of the SAME design base as this example, a similar but a little more fancy knop. Also a 17th Century silver lidded tankard with unidentified marks probably Prussian of c1690 has Dutch import marks of 1859-1983... JUST like this chalice.

I really do think this is an important Belgian / Netherlands chalice which should not be overlooked.
