The British Royal Navy remembers Cornwallis's Retreat as a notable incident of the Napoleonic Wars in which Admiral William Cornwallis's little fleet, operating off the French coast of Brittany , was attacked by a large French Naval Squadron; after 2 days retreat,  Cornwallis counterattacked the large French fleet , causing their retreat and enabling ecape by the British. The heroic action of June 17, 1795 is memorialized by portraits of the era. An original circa 1870s era photograph of one such portrait of the battle, showing the action. The 9 x 7" photo is mounted on a 13 x 12" heavy mat, with ink inscriptions describing the battle "Cornwallis's Retreat 17th June 1795 " and naming the English ships of the Line- The Royal Sovereign, HMS Mars, HMS Brunswick, Bellerophon, The Phaeton,  and the Palllas, naming the Captains of ech, also showing the French fleet of 14 frigates.
