The series started out in 2008 with the mouse, then followed by the ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. This lunar series is set to end in 2019 with the year of the pig. The 2009 lunar year of the ox coin comes in PF condition and the year is associated with determination, patience, and dependability.

The obverse of this coin displays Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as captured by Raphael Maklouf. Around Queen Elizabeth II, the weight, purity, denominations, and the year of the mintage is engraved around her portrait. The reverse portrays an ox and its calf in front of a grassland with mountains in the background. Around the ox and its calf are inscriptions of the "P" mint mark, "Year of the Ox," and the Chinese character for the ox.
