This is one of a number of items from Forcett Hall near Richmond in North Yorkshire that came from the late J.H. Edwards - Heathcote Esq family.
I was fortunate to buy a number of lots from this estate sale which I find most fascinating for my own collection as well as for re-sale. The items include other related family surnames that have been passed on down family lines from earlier generations. They're extensive and rather complicated at times family relations such as Bowyers, Gresley - Baronets, Pike of Ireland, Edensor - Heathcote, Edensor, Sandford and Waller to name just a few.
The Edwards - Heathcote family originally lived in Apedale, other places of interest include Drakelow Park, the home of Sir Nigel Gresley 6th Baronet, mine owner and canal builder, Langton - Longton Hall which belonged to Sir John Edensor Heathcote, industrialist and he married Anne Gresley, related to Oswald Mosley ( fascist ) family too by marriage, to name but a few.
The families that married into each other are shown really well on the Fob and Hand Desk Seals when I get to those.
This is the personal desk hand seal matrix engraved from polished steel lacking its original handle. It is no worse for that. At least it has not been thrown out over the years.
This seal matrix has the personal seal of Sir John Bowyer Gresley, 7th Baronet, of Drakelow Park.
He was High Sheriff of Derbyshire.
The seal is rather nice with the Dexter HAND in the middle at the top which is indicating this is a Baronets seal. It is the badge of a Baronet of the United Kingdom.
Then the coat of arms of the Bowyer Gresley family. With slight foliage engraved around the outside and the Crest part has a human face head wearing what looks like a turban type hat with a 5 leaf of plume top.
This seal is missing its handle.
No maker's marks or metal marks etc.
In collectable condition with normal signs of age and use wear. The metal ware is tarnished and has slight rust stains. As mentioned, the handle is missing.
Please see pictures for more details and visual confirmation of condition.
The matrix measures approx. 22mm x 20mm x 3cm tall... the dia. of the handle part is 12mm.
It still makes a very nice wax seal impression.
