From a story found online:
1955
The Festival of States becomes the Sunshine Festival, to give it "more glamor." . . . An estimated 350,000 people attend the parade, which is televised for the first time. Total viewership is estimated at 1-million.

L. Chauncey Brown, chosen for civic leadership, is the first Mr. Sun. Marion Snider, Brown's daughter says: "Actually, I was a page in the Festival of States before daddy was Mr. Sun. He loved St. Petersburg. The coronation ball was lovely that night. Afterward, he and my mother left for Havana as goodwill ambassadors." . . . The first Goddess of the Sun is Alice Thomas.

1957
The Suncoasters, an all-male group of civic leaders, is formed to oversee the festival. J. Lee Ballard is the first Suncoaster president.

Women competing for the title of Sungoddess, renamed from Goddess of the Sun, no longer have to parade the length of the Coliseum on a runway in bathing suits. The decision brings national attention to the festival. Bathing suits are still commonly worn on floats.
