On November 11, 1918, at 11:00 a.m in France, Hartley Benson Edwards, a young United States soldier lifted his bugle to his lips and played ''Taps'' and signaled to the world that World War I had ended. Hartley Edwards [1898 1978] was the personal bugler of General John J. Pershing and just a few minutes before 11.00 a.m. he was ordered by a sergeant to play ''Taps''. Edwards argued that it was played only at funerals or for light's out but was told it was an order from General Pershing, his way of letting everyone know that the war was over. Hartley Edwards left the service in 1919 but continued to play for various groups such as Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and twice he blew ''Taps'' at Arlington Cemetery in Washington when Presidents Harry Truman and John F. Kennedy laid wreaths on the tomb of the Unknown soldier. In 1965, Hartley Edwards bugle was donated to the Smithsonian where it is on display today. Listed for auction is a postal cover signed by Hartley Benson Edwards. The cover contains a small photo of Edwards and is signed and addressed in blue ink. The cover is postmarked Nov 17 1961, and is affixed with one U.S. commemorative postage stamp which honors general Pershing. The cover measures 6.50 x 3.50 inches, it has trivial toning otherwise it is in fine condition. The autograph is authentic, and the cover will be a desirable addition to any World War I collection.
