Colombia, Bolivar and His Government - Fine Binding -

12vo., contemporary green roan, the covers with borders of fine floral roll-tools, the smooth spine gilt ruled in six compartments, gilt lettered in one; Provenance: inscribed on the verso of the first blank: "Offer To Senior General Scamander President Della Nova Granada ill 31 Marco 1837"; from the library of Jacques Levy, his sale, Sotheby's, 20th April 2012, lot 338.

First edition, apparently prepared for the entry on the Republic of Colombia in the 7th edition of the "Encyclopaedia Britannica" published in 1842. This edition includes a prologue by Santander, President of Nueva Granada, with interesting data about the political situation at that moment.

Including an account of Simon Bolivar [1783/1830] and the War of Independence from the Spanish Empire [1810/1819]. Bolívar fought for the creation of the first union of independent nations in Hispanic-America, a republic, which was named Gran Colombia, of which he was president from 1819 to 1830.

In Hispanic-America Bolivar is revered as a hero, visionary, revolutionary, and liberator. During his lifetime, he led Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, and Bolivia to independence, and helped lay the foundations for democratic ideology in much of Latin America.

This lovely copy has been inscribed to Francisco José de Paula Santander y Omani [1792/1840], although there is no indication that he owned it. Scamander was a Colombian military and political leader during the War of Independence of the United Provinces of New Granada [present-day Colombia]. He preceded Bolivar as the acting President of Gran Colombia between 1819 and 1826, and was later elected by Congress as the President of the Republic of New Granada between 1832 and 1837. Santander came to be known as "The Man of the Laws"["El Hombre de las Leyes"].(RF#257) (L14/119) (X99X000775)
