Welcome to Antiques & Moore!

This listing is for an unusual Victorian Era silver plated novelty mechanical jewelry box. This gorgeous box has an embossed pattern on the border of the lid, around the lower body and on the platform shelf at the base. As the handle is pushed backward, the jewelry box drawer slides to the front exposing a pretty padded blue satin fabric lined interior. Box sits of four raised feet with a rolling "foot" at the front to support the jewelry drawer. Marked on the base with the Middleton Plate Co. trademark stamp and "28, Hard White Metal, Patented, 196". The Middleton Plate Co. of Middleton CT was founded in 1864 with this mark being used until 1921.

Measures 7 1/2" high (to top of handle in closed position), 4" high (to top of box), 6" wide and 4 5/8" deep. Weighs 2.2 pounds.

This nice mechanical jewelry box is in excellent Estate condition with no noted flaws and reflecting only minimal signs of normal wear. On the handle where it attaches to the box there is an extra hole drilled below the attachment support on each side that is unexplained but appears to be as made. There doesn't appear to be anything missing on the box or a purpose for this hole. It is mentioned for accuracy and doesn't detract at all from the beauty of this rare jewelry box.
