AUTOR

Petrus Comestor (1100-1178)

eigentlich Petrus Manducator, war ein bedeutender französischer Theologe. Er wirkte an der Kirche Notre-Dame von Troyes und pflegte als Presbyter Trecensis zu unterzeichnen. 1148 wurde er Dekan des Domkapitels. In Paris war er Schüler von Petrus Lombardus. In Paris schrieb Petrus Comestor seine Historia Scholastica, er widmete sie dem Bischof von Sens, Guillaume aux Blanches Mains (1169-76).
1178 zog er sich in das Pariser Kloster St. Viktor zurück und starb dort noch im selben Jahr. Den Beinamen „Comestor“ (der Verzehrer), erhielt Petrus bereits zu Lebzeiten wegen seiner Leidenschaft für das Bücherlesen.

BESCHREIBUNG

Die Historia Scholastica ist ein biblisches Lehrbuch der Weltgeschichte. Petrus Comestor beginnt seine Erzählung mit der Schöpfungsgeschichte und setzt sie fort bis zu den Ereignissen aus der Apostelgeschichte. Als Quellen dienen ihm sowohl die Bibel als auch Schriften weltlicher Autoren, besonders Flavius Josephus bzgl. des Anfangs der Evangelien. Hinweise aus Geographie, Kosmologie, Philosophie, Theologie, Etymologie usw. bilden einen Kommentar zur Heiligen Schrift.

Zweispaltige gotische Type, 46-48 Zeilen. Interlinearglossen -  Einschub von Kommentaren innerhalb einer Spalte. Jungfräuliche Initialspatien.

EINBAND

Originaler, spätgotischer Ledereinband, wohl Süddeutschland. Blindgeprägtes Kalbsleder über massiven Holzdeckeln. Runde und Viereckige Prägestempel Blüte, Drachen, Greifvogel sowie Spruchbänder „IHS“. 4 Doppelbünde. 2 intakte Schließen. Sehr guter, altrestaurierter, weitgehend genuiner Originalzustand. Buchblock und Bindung fest und stabil. Deckel berieben und abgegriffen und mit einigen restaurierten Wurmlöchlein. Gelenke beschabt.

Folio: 31,0 x 22,0 x 5,8 cm

ZUSTAND

Ausgezeichneter Originalzustand. Kräftiger Druck auf festem Büttenpapier. Breitrandiges Exemplar. Sauberes und frisch wirkendes Exemplar, nur in den Außenrändern gebräunt. Erste und letzte Seiten mit einigen Wurmlöchern. Eine wenige zeitgenössische, handschriftliche Marginalien. Blatt a2 links oben im Rand mit handgeschriebenen Nummern, wohl aus dem 20. Jhd.  Erste 4 Blatt mit Läsuren am rechten Außenrand, a1 mit kleinem Ausriss am rechten Rand. Sonst keine Risse, Beschädigungen oder Fehlstellen.

Auf dem Vorderspiegel Exlibris des „Saint Mary´s of the Barrens Seminary“.
Dort ebenso Exlibris von Kenneth Rapoport.

AUTHOR

Petrus Comestor (1100-1178), also Petrus Manducator, was an eminent French theologian. He worked at the church of Notre-Dame de Troyes. In 1148 he became dean of the cathedral chapter. In Paris he was a pupil of Peter Lombard. In Paris Comestor Peter wrote his Historia Scholastica, he devoted himself to the Bishop of Sens, Guillaume aux Blanches Mains (1169-76). In 1178 he retired to the monastery of St. Victor in Paris, and died there in the same year.

The Historia Scholastica is a biblical text book of world history. Peter Comestor begins his narrative with the story of creation and continues up to the events in Acts. His sources, both the Bible and writings of secular authors, particularly Josephus used with respect to the beginning of the Gospels. Evidence from geography, cosmology, philosophy, theology, etymology form a commentary on the Scriptures.

Gothic type with double columnes with 46-48 lines. Partly text surrounded by comments (Interlinearglossen). Empty initial speces.

BINDING

Original, late Gothic, probably Southern German leather binding. Blind stamped calf leather over solid wooden boards. Round and Square embossing from stamps with flowers, dragons, birds of prey and banner  "IHS". 4 compartments. 2 intact clasps. Very good condition. Old restored. Inner book and bindind strong and stable. Covers  rubbed and scratched and with some filled wormholes. Hinges scraped.

Folio: 31 x 22 x 5,8 cm

Excellent condition. Strong print on strong handmade paper. Wide margined copy. Clean and fresh-looking print, only in the outer margins slightly brownish. First and last pages with some wormholes. Some contemporary handwritten arginals and comments. Leaf a2 with handwritten numbers from 20th century. First four leaves with blemishes on the right outer margin, leaf a1 with a little loss on the right margin. Otherwise no tears, no cracks or losses.
