The predecessors of the United States Coast Guard were life saving volunteers organizations established in the 18th century  and continued into the 19th century. The State of Massachusetts established the "Humane Society of Massachusetts" to fund and support volunteers active in aiding shipwrecked mariners and survivors washed ashore in some of the bitterest coastal waters in the America's. An Original printed American Broadside dated at Boston, January 8, 1783 announcing "The Humane Society of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, actuated by the same benevolent disposition to mitigate the miseries , and preserve the lives of their fellow men", noes the Society has erected 3 small houses for the preservation of shipwrecked seamen- One on Lovell's Island in Boston Harbor, one on Nantucket's Outer Beach and one on Scituate Beach with details , noting one of which has already been the means of saving the lives of several mariners, and calls for funds to aid in establishing other such houses. The Imprint Advertisement is issued by the Order of the Trustees, S. Parker, Recording Secretary. This original imprint  broadside is approx 25 x 19 cm, printed on high quality rag paper stock. This scarce broadside is listed in  World Cat in 3 editions, with holdings included at Johns Hopkins Library and the Mass Historical Society among others. I obtained this for my collection in the early 1980s and it has not been offered previously. Edge wear, minor  age stains, Overall VG.
