Книжка «Драгоценный подарок детям, или Новейшая и полная российская азбука» оформлена просто, но на редкость изящно. На титульном листе - ажурная рамка, в тексте - мастерски выполненные виньетки,
нравоучительные картинки и забавные изображения животных, иллюстрирующие басни и небольшие повести.
Шрифты выбраны чёткие, крупные. Ровные строчки чувствуют себя на страницах просторно, не теснят друг друга.
Всё сделано толково, умело, с любовью и уважением к маленькому читателю, который должен взять сей
«драгоценный подарок» в руки.
Как и положено изданиям такого рода, он содержит русскую азбуку, «склады» из двух, трёх и четырёх букв,
молитвы, «отрывки из натуральной истории» (где можно узнать, что «есть три царства природы: царство животных,
царство прозябаемых и царство минералов»), басни и нравоучительные повести, таблицу умножения, краткие
правила арифметики и грамматики, а среди них - объяснения знаков препинания: «Точка (.) в конце речи полный
смысл заключает. Например: "Тот подаст великую надежду к исправлению, кто признается, что сделал дурно".
Запятая (,) ставится между такими словами, которые в речи одно от другого не зависят и полагаются сряду без союза
или и со многими союзами. Например: "И праздность, и дела, и печаль, и радость, и убожество - всё истощает силы".
Вместительный знак употребляется, когда в середину речи вносятся такие слова, кои в связи оной не подходят и
полагаются или для изъяснения, или для другого какого обстоятельства. Например: "Искренние люди вообще имеют
ту слабость (ежели можно назвать сие слабостью), что о всех других людях судят по себе самих". Вопросительный знак
(?) ставится после вопроса. Например: "Можешь ли ты это сделать?" Удивительный знак (!) поставляется после
взыскания, восклицания и вообще после всякой такой речи, которая означает удивление. Например:
"Любезные юноши! Занимайтесь науками!"»
The book "Precious Gift for Children, or the New and Complete Russian Alphabet" is simple, but extremely
elegant. On the title page is an openwork frame with floral ornamentation, in the text - masterfully executed vignettes,
moralising pictures and amusing images of animals illustrating fables and small stories. Fonts are chosen clear, large.
Straight lines feel on the pages of space, do not press each other. Everything is done sensibly, skillfully, with love and
respect for the little reader who must take this "precious gift" in his hands.
As well as it is necessary to editions of this kind, it contains the Russian alphabet, "warehouses" of two, three and four
letters, prayers, "excerpts from natural history" (where you can find out that "there are three kingdoms of nature:
the kingdom of animals, the kingdom of the vegetated and the kingdom minerals "), fables and moralizing tale,
multiplication table, brief rules of arithmetic and grammar, and among them - explanations of punctuation marks:
" The dot at the end of speech makes a complete sense. For example: "He will give a great hope for correction, who will admit
that he did wrong." A comma (,) is placed between words that do not depend on one another in the speech and are relied on
in succession without a union or with many unions. For example: "And idleness, and deeds, and sorrow, and joy, and squalor -
all drains forces." A capacious sign () is used when in the middle of a speech such words are entered, which in connection
with this do not fit and rely either for an explanation or for some other circumstance. For example: "Sincere people generally
have that weakness (if one can call it weakness) that all other people judge by themselves." The question mark (?) Is put after
the question. For example: "Can you do this?" An amazing sign (!) Comes after collecting, exclamation and generally after
any such speech, which means surprise. For example: "Dear young men, study in science!"
