US Army Captain Reuben M Potter Potter was a young American resident of Matamoras  who served in the Texian Army until captured in 1827. In 1835 he was an eyewitness to the  historic Battle of Goliad, Texas, October, 1835 and personally parleyed for to save the survivors of the Goliad Massacre. He also was witness to and reported on the Siege & Battle of San Jacinto, the final victory of the Texian Army over Santa Anna's Mexican forces ending the War with Independence for Texas. But he is most remembered in Texas History as the first American to visit the fallen Alamo,  gather accounts of participants and eyewitnesses to the massacre of the Texian garrison, providing the  the first reliable report of the Battle. He also wrote the beloved "Hymn of the Alamo".

Comes w detailed account of his life. 2pp * x 11" ink, signed on reverse in large script "Yr Obt Svt Reuben M Potter, MSG USA", signed 4 years before his classic account "The Fall of the Alamo" was published.  Edge wear, age stains, Overall VG.
