Description
Lantana Camara is a small perennial shrub which can grow to around 2 meters (6 feet) tall and form dense thickets in a variety of environments. Due to extensive selective breeding throughout the 17th and 18th Centuries for use as an ornamental plant, there are now many different lantana Camara cultivars.
Lantana Camara has small tubular shaped flowers, which each have four petals and are arranged in clusters in terminal areas. Flowers come in many different colors, including red, yellow, white, pink and orange, which differ depending on location in inflorescence, age, and maturity. The flower has a tutti fruity smell with a peppery undertone. After pollination occurs the color of the flowers changes (typically from yellow to orangish, pinkish, or reddish); this is believed to be a signal to pollinators that the pre-change color contains a reward as well as being sexually viable, thus increasing pollination efficiency.
The leaves are broadly ovate, opposite, and simple and have a strong odor when crushed.
The fruit of lantana Camara is a berry-like drupe which turns from green to dark purple when mature. Green unripe fruits are inedible to humans and animals alike. Because of dense patches of hard spikes on their rind, ingestion of them can result in serious damage to the digestive tract. Both vegetative (asexual) and seed reproduction occur. Up to 12,000 fruits can be produced by each plant which are then eaten by birds and other animals which can spread the seeds over large distances, facilitating the spread of lantana Camara.
Growing Lantana from Seeds
Start lantana seeds indoors six to eight weeks before you plan to transplant them outdoors. Soak the seeds for 24 hours in warm water to soften the seed coat. Fill small, individual pots to within ½ inch of the top with soilless seed starting medium and moisten the medium with water. Lay one or two seeds in the center of each pot and cover the seeds with 1/8 inch of soil. If more than one seedling emerges, clip out the weakest plant with a pair of scissors. Growing lantana from seed is easiest when you keep the soil consistently moist and at a steady temperature between 70 and 75 F. (21-24 C.) day and night. A good way to maintain the moisture is to place the pots in a plastic bag and seal the bag. While the pots are in the bag, keep them away from direct sunlight. Check the pots often and remove the bag as soon as the seedlings emerge. Don’t give up too soon—the seeds may take a month or more to germinate.
