The Bard by Gray, Illustrated and a forward by John Martin. This is an interesting slim volume. The Bard was written by Thomas Gray and first published in 1757. It had a huge impact on the Romantics. This edition was produced by John Martin and presented to Queen Victoria on her accession in 1837. The poem is illustrated by the Hon Mrs John Talbot. There are only a few copies in circulation and the copy presented to the Monarch is still in the Royal Collection. This copy has the bookplate of Ann Newell Hill, the Lady of the Manor of Asby Winderwath, Cumbria and has, at some stage, been sold by Galloway & Porter of Cambridge. Some damage to the spine and moderate foxing but otherwise good.
