This is a 1887 Victorian Jubilee Head shilling coin which has been enamelled on the front.

It has been LOOSE mounted in a silver frame with a pin on the back to turn it into a brooch. I have not shown it out of the frame but be assured this coin is NOT pinned into position in the frame its loose. Just pinch together the two silver wires on the back and open the pin and the coin comes out. So you could use this mount for another coin of your own that fits.

The frame has been hand painted with little enamel flowers - very pretty and fine work.

No maker's marks etc.

Please see pictures provided for more details and visual confirmation of condition.
There are a couple of shallow chips in the enamelling and it is scuffed on the surface.
The frame has a couple of tiny splits on the edges.

The coin measures approx. 22mm in diameter.
The mount measures approx. 36mm in diameter.

During the Georgian and Victorian period the jewellers and silversmiths started to make jewellery and items from coins of the period as well as older coins. You can find coins inset in the bowl of " toddy ladles " and spoons often had a coin in the bowl. Ashtrays and tankards too made from coins and medals. The Victorian period saw a greater volume of coins being enamelled and they used previous Monarchs period coins quite often and foreign coins too. The more elaborate examples are enamelled on both sides and they would have them fitted into gold or silver coin brooch mounts which sometimes allowed the coins to swivel in the frame. Do have a look at my other listings for enamel coins and silver coin brooch mounts.
