The film is adapted from Jiang Rong's novel "Wolf Totem" of the same name. The author describes the living world of the wolf from his own personal experience mainly in the Mongolian grassland during the cultural revolution and from an almost autobiographical narrative perspective, calls for the values of harmonious coexistence between man and nature, and remembers the totems of early human beings: freedom, independence, tenacity, brave spirit, character, will and dignity that never yield and never surrender.
In 1967, Beijing educated youth Chen Zhen (fengshaofeng) and Yang Ke (Dou Xiao) responded to the call to go up the mountain and down the country to join the queue on the Inner Mongolia Erlun grassland, met the Mongolian herdsmen bilige (Basen) and gasmai (onhanima), and also met the awe inspiring animal of Zui on the grassland: the wolf. In the process of contact with wolves, Chen Zhen had a strong interest in this species and even had the idea of raising a wolf by himself. At this time, a group of outsiders greedily plundered the Yellow sheep stored by wolves for the winter, breaking the ecological balance between wolves and herdsmen. The production team led by the director of the field department, Bao shungui (Yin Zhusheng), launched a campaign to eliminate wolves, which made the relationship between wolves and humans tense
