This is a vintage antique sample of patented barbed wire.  This sample features a Milton C. Shinn patent, dated March 1, 1881.   This wire is called "Shinn's Locked-On Four Point Herring Bone Barb on Twisted Oval Line" by collectors. (ref Hagemeier 167-B VARIATION). (I could not find a listing for this patent, with a herring bone pattern on barbing wires.)    This wire features a single heavy gauge oval line wire.  Line wire is twisted.   Barbs are four pointed made by wrapping two barbing wires together and hooking one pair of ends together to hold barbs to line wire.   Wire sample is at least 18" in length.  Sample shows age and use wear, with light pitting.  There are four barbs, well spaced and cut is well centered. There are no missing or broken barbs.  Wire is in good used condition.
