Photographer Joe Clark, the Hill Billy Snap Shooter (HBSS), was known for his snapshots that captured the spirit of country life in his hometown of Cumberland Gap, documenting friends and neighbors harvesting, baling hay, herding sheep, and tilling fields. The International Harvester Farmall tractor was first introduced in 1923. Helping to boost productivity, it had become the most popular tractor in America by the 1940s. The "M" series shown here in fire-engine red (or "Farmall Red") was the largest model in the line at the time this photograph was taken, with the biggest engine an 35 horsepower.
