This late 2014 116i M-Sport edition combines an enviable specification with the powerful, yet frugal 1.6 litre, 16-valve engine mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox. This model of 1 series is the perfect BMW for a time when everyone is feeling the pinch from increasing fuel prices as it has a combined fuel consumption of 46 mpg and costs just £130 a year to tax thanks to its low emissions and stop-start technology. Like all BMW's it is well built, comfortable and practical. Finished in metallic grey this cars desirable M-sport specification means you get plenty of creature comforts and the added appeal of the sporting 3 door body clothed with M-Sport body enhancements. The muscular lines give the car a ground hugging stance with distinctive 5 spoke alloy wheels ensure the compact 1 series has a menacing and sporty look. Our car is finished in a classy looking metallic grey "sparkling graphite" which is among the best colours to carry off this sporting image. Inside there is a sporty comfortable and well equipped interior with climate controlled air-conditioning and cruise control - a very useful feature which is not standard on a majority of 1 series. Of course it is also highly practical with 5 seats and a decent boot - Essentially there is as much room as in its 5 door sibling so its ideal for small families as well as those who want a sporty hatch.
Our car has an enviable specification which includes factory fitted cruise control and front and rear park-distance sensors. This model is also fitted with the latest start-stop technology so the engine will switch off when stationary and re-start as you depress the clutch - ensuring you do not waste fuel sat in traffic. On a combined cycle BMW claim an average of 48 mpg but this will increase even further on a steady motorway run. Even more impressive though is the performance...
They don't label themselves "The ultimate driving machine" for nothing!! BMW are most famous for being a superb drivers car. The 1 series may be compact 3 door hatch, but is in every way a true BMW - A true drivers car which shares its bloodline with some of the fastest and most powerful sports saloons on the planet. You sit in supportive, yet comfortable seats with a sporty 3 spoke steering wheel which has a tactile feel. Our 1 series has push button start, and even before you press the start button you get a sense of power and control. The driving position on a 1-series has always been one of my favourites with virtually no wheel arch intrusion meaning you are able to sit dead straight with no off-set to the pedals. This uncompromised driving position is typical of BMW's constant drive for perfection in every detail of their cars.
Press the "start" button and the 134bhp power-plant settles to a smooth, quiet idle. This is a fast and responsive car - 0-60 mph takes just 8.4 seconds with a top speed of 130mph. The turn in is sharp and responsive with the taut chassis being aided by cornering brake control and BMW's DTC stability and traction control along with responsive ABS brakes. With perfect weight distribution, rear wheel drive and an advanced traction control system to keep the power in check, the 116i strikes a perfect balance, being great fun but also superbly safe and predictable. Whilst the 1 series may be of similar size to a VW Golf, it is, rear-wheel drive with near perfect 50/50 weight distribution. A fine chassis combined with sharp and responsive steering make this one of the finest drives in its class. BMW's superb driving position ensures you will always feel comfortable behind the wheel and the car offers excellent support and comfort. Through twists and turns the 1 series is guaranteed to raise a smile whilst, on the open road, the BMW soaks up the miles with ease and offers effortless high speed motorway cruising with factory fitted cruise control which is a joy to use. All the controls are well laid out and the visibility is excellent. The superb driving position ensures drivers of all shapes and sizes will be comfortable behind the wheel of the compact 1 series.
