At all the major sanctuaries of ancient Greece, the Greeks included athletic contests among their ways of honouring the gods.
The oldest and most important of these games were those held at the sanctuary of Olympia.
After 776 BC, the year in which the first Olympics were held, their fame spread rapidly through East and West.
While the Olympic Games were taking place, and for some time before and after them, a Sacred Truce was enforced in Greece.
Wars stopped, and people devoted themselves exclusively to the works of peace.
It was at Olympia that the ideal of fair competition was founded, and it became the basis for the education of young people.
It was believed that the spirit should be cultivated in parallel with the maximum possible development of the body, and victors in the Olympic Games were expected to be outstanding in both respects.
To honour the most ancient and noblest Games of human history, Pelikan has created "Genesis of the Olympiad"
This pen, of the choicest quality, has peen produced in a limited edition of only 776 - the same number, that is,
as the date of the first Olympiad (776 BC).
