The 282nd Assault Helicopter Company, also known as the "Black Cats," was a helicopter unit that served in the Vietnam War. Here is a brief overview of its history from inception to deactivation:

Inception: The 282nd Assault Helicopter Company was activated on 15 August 1965 at Fort Benning, Georgia. It was initially formed with UH-1D "slick" helicopters, which were unarmed and used for troop transport and medical evacuation.

Deployment to Vietnam: In October 1965, the 282nd deployed to Vietnam, arriving at Di An Base Camp near Saigon. The unit was assigned to the 12th Combat Aviation Group and later to the 1st Aviation Brigade.

Mission: The primary mission of the 282nd was to provide air mobility support to US Army and allied forces operating in Vietnam. This included troop insertion and extraction, resupply missions, reconnaissance, and medical evacuation.

Aircraft: Over time, the 282nd transitioned to using more UH-1H "gunship" helicopters, which were equipped with machine guns and rockets for fire support missions.

Operations: The unit participated in numerous operations throughout the war, including support for the 1st Infantry Division in Operation Cedar Falls and Operation Junction City, as well as providing support during the Tet Offensive in 1968.

Deactivation: The 282nd Assault Helicopter Company was deactivated on 15 August 1971, as part of the drawdown of US forces in Vietnam. The unit's aircraft and personnel were transferred to other units or returned to the United States.
