*This backward-looking Oaxacan Cat Wood Carving is a real stunner.
*Approx. dimensions:  6.5" long x 6" high
*Carved in the workshop of Margarito Melchor Fuentes, in San Martin Tilcajete, Oaxaca Mexico
*Meticulously and sharply hand-painted in gorgeous shades of blues and white, with red ears that pop out from the blue.

This cat is typical in style for Margarito Melchor Fuentes, who is famous for his cat carvings.  Margarito is a well-known Mexican artisan, whose work graces the cover of one of the best-known books covering Oaxacan woodcarvings, Oaxacan Woodcarving, The Magic in the Trees, by Shepard Barbash.

*Oaxacan woodcarvings are also called alebrijes (pronounced all-ay-bree-hays) - they are carved in small family workshops on the outskirts of the city of Oaxaca. They're often bright and whimsical and can be very collectible. Cats are a favorite.
