Background To Issue: Influenced by Malay and Scottish watercraft, the traditional wooden sailboat of Cocos (Keeling) Islands was well adapted to the needs and conditions of the atoll environment. The jukong (or dukong) was broad-bottomed, with a shallow draught and almost vertical sides. As well as being used for work, fishing and transportation, jukongs were used for social racing. This included between Home Islanders and the telegraph staff based at the cable station on Direction Island. Eric E Story was an Eastern Extension Telegraph Company engineer posted to the cable station between 1922 and 1941, and the photographs in this issue are among those he and his colleagues took during their time at Cocos (Keeling) Islands.
