clean book without library stamps, registrations, marks, underlines and spots, on several pages around the lower corner
are traces of paging; cover - scuffs and pollution of the covers, several fragments along the edges of the covers are glued
with paper, damage to the spine, in the lower part of the spine traces of glue; minor defects, traces of time (see scans).
NB! Please note that this is the first edition of the book, which was printed 94 years ago, not more late re-edition or modern reprint.

   "The Songs of Bilitis" is a collection of erotic, essentially lesbian, poetry by the Frenchman Pierre Louis, published in Paris 
in 1894. In 1928, this small selection of 16 selected songs was translated into Latvian by Janis Sudrabkalns. The selection was 
published as an art publication with exquisite erotic graphics by Sigismunds Vidberg. Poems about lesbian love written in ancient 
greek style. In accordance with the theme, the artist created illustrations depicting young naked women by drawing their naked 
bodies on antique objects: on ancient Greek vases, banks, plates and their fragments. Each song has an illustration, therefore, 
the book contains 16 full-page graphic drawings and a frontispiece, a total of 17 illustrations. In this work Sigismunds Vidbergs 
achieved a great interaction between text and image, masterfully showing the worldview of the ancient Greeks inherent 
in the flesh and spirit living in harmony. Art Nouveau drawings made using Indian ink technique are an amazing expression 
a comprehensive sensuality, love, carnal, erotic, which brought a new image of a modern woman in Latvian art and life. 
Thanks to this graphic cycle, the artist made a breakthrough in Eastern European art in search of a new graphic path expression, 
but at the same time was heavily criticized by society.

   Unlike the first album "Erotica", this edition had a more strictly limited edition (only 550 copies, which were distributed by 
subscription). Each copy was numbered and signed by the artist for each specific subscriber, who previously paid the full cost of 
the book (a full list of subscribers by last name and their corresponding numbers is given on last 6 pages at the end of the book). 
   This copy is signed by Sigismunds Vidbergs.

    Books of the famous erotic trilogy of Sigismunds Vidbergs:
1. Erotika. Publisher "Saule". It was printed in the printing house "Latvian Culture" in Riga in 1926 with a print run of 1,500 copies.
2. 16 Songs of Bilitis [Lesbian love]. Publishing house "Ars". Printed at the Latvian Culture Printing House in Riga in 1928
     in the amount of 550 numbered registered copies.
3. KAMA SUTRA. Publishing house "Ars". It was repurchased in the printing house "Latvian Culture" in Riga in 1931 in quantity
    401th numbered registered copies.

   Latvian grand master Sigismunds Vidbergs (1890 - 1970) was one of the truly original and versatile Latvian artists.
He is mostly known as a wonderful graphic artist and book illustrator, but he also designed textiles and stained glass,
painted porcelain, and worked as a theatre set designer and an art teacher. He is distinguished by contemporary
perception and depiction of the world, his capacity for bringing together current trends and classical values in art. 
His pen and ink drawings, stylistically refined and technically perfect, are the hallmark of his graphic art. He started 
in Jugendstyle, but changed his style into art deco in the second half of the 1920s. Artist's drawing is decorative, 
salon-like, elegant, the influence of the orient and erotic taste being noticeable.

обложка - потёртости и загрязнения, правый край передней обложки в нескольких местах подклеен бумагой; повреждение корешка, 
в нижней части корешка следы клея; мелкие дефекты, следы времени (смотри сканы).
NB! Обратите внимание, что это первое издание, напечатанное 94 года назад, а не современное юбилейное переиздание 1990 г.

   «Песни Билитис» - это сборник эротической, по сути лесбийской, поэзии француза Пьера Луи, опубликованный в Париже 
в 1894 году. В 1928 году эта небольшая подборка из состоящая из 16 отобранных песен была переведена на латышский язык 
Янисом Судрабкалнсом. Подборка была издана как художественное издание с изысканной эротической графикой Сигизмунда Видберга. 
Стихи о лесбийской любви написаны в древнегреческом стиле. В соответствии с темой художник создавал иллюстрации с изображением 
молодых обнаженных женщин, нарисовав их обнажённые тела на старинные предметы: на древнегреческие вазы, банки, тарелки и 
их фрагменты. Каждая песня имеет иллюстрацию, поэтому книга содержит 16 полностнаничных графических рисунков и фронтиспис, 
всего 17 иллюстраций. В этой работе Сигизмунд Видберг достиг великого взаимодействия между текстом и изображением, мастерски 
показывая мировоззрение древних греков, присущих плоти и духу, живущему в гармонии. Рисунки в стиле модерн, созданные с 
использованием техники индийских чернил, являются удивительным выражением всеобъемлющей чувственности, любви, плотской, 
эротической, которая принесла новый образ современной женщины в латвийском искусстве и жизни. Благодаря этому графическому 
циклу художник совершил прорыв в восточноевропейском искусстве в поисках нового пути графического выражения, но в то же время 
был сильно раскритикован обществом.

В отличии от первого альбома "Эротика", это издание имело строго ограниченный тираж (всего 550 экземпляров, который 
распостранялся по подписке). Каждый экземпляр был пронумерован и подписан художником для каждого конкретного подписчика, 
который предварительно оплатил полную стоимость книги (полный список подписчиков по фамилиям и соответствующим им номерам 
приведен на 6 стр. в конце книги). Данный экземпляр подписан Сигизмундов Видбергом.

Сигизмунд Видберг (1890 - 1970) - самый заметный представитель графического искусства Art-Deco, один из самых оригинальных 
латвийских художников 20-го века, чье творческое наследие отличается своей универсальностью. Он создал в области станковой и 
прикладной графики, росписи фарфора, книжных и журнальных иллюстраций и коммерческих рисунков. В его работах доминирует 
техника рисования тушью. Художник затрагивал широкий круг тем: исторические и современные мотивы,городская и сельская жизнь, 
религиозные сцены, портреты, исследования архитектуры и природы. Тем не менее, Видбергс является самым известным в общей 
панораме Латвийское искусство за его элегантную интерпретацию эротических мотивов, сохраняющее классическое чувство меры 
даже при решении очень рискованных тем.
