Allspice is the fruit of the tree, Pimenta dioica, of the same family as pepper. It is traditionally grown in Mexico, Central America and countries with a warm climate.

Allspice is the fruit of a tree called Pimenta dioica which is green in color when harvested and turns brown when dried.

The spice has a hard texture, distinctive aroma and peppery taste and resembles black peppercorns in appearance. Its aroma is reminiscent of a mixture of cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg, which is why the English call it "allspice", i.e. all the spices together, and it is mainly used in roasting recipes.

In which recipes is the spice used?
The spice goes well with all casserole recipes. Try it in meat soups and some dessert recipes.

Crush a few grains of it and pour them into chocolate drink. Make pickles, flavored oils, chutneys, pickles, white sauces and barbeque sauces.
