SPAIN - OLD SPANISH BANKNOTE - Banco De España issue of a 50 Pesetas Banknote dated 1928, issued in 1936/7 during the Republican period, in crisp, bright and clean condition. A superb example which grades in almost Uncirculated.

This lovely note has an effigy at the right side of the famous 17th Century Spanish artist/painter Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velazquez(1599-1660). He is widely regarded as one of the world’s greatest artists. Prominent at the lower centre of the note is an image of the Prado Museum in Madrid, where many of Velazquez's paintings are housed.
On the reverse of the note is an illustration of the painting called 'La rendición de Breda' (The Surrender of Breda) by Velázquez, painted in 1635, it is now housed in the Prada Museum in Madrid. At the lower right corner is the Coat of Arms of Spain.
The head of a woman in profile is in the watermark area at the top left of the note.
The note is dated Madrid, 15 de Agosto de 1928 at the Upper centre on the face just below the denomination as 'CINCUENTA PESETAS. This date is misleading because of the Spanish Civil War, as retained stocks of this note in the vaults of the Banco De Espana, were not actually issued for circulation until 1936/37 during the Republican period.
Serial Number B3,328,351 is in Red at the lower centre left on the face and at each corner on the reverse. The note has the signatures of Don Carlos Vergara Cailleaux as El Gobernador (Governor) and Adolfo Castaño Orejón as- El Interventor (Auditor) at the centre on the face and that of Bonifacio Burgos Delgado as El Cajero (Cashier) at the lower right, Interestingly the signature of Delgado is handstamped in Black, while the others are printed in Purple, indicating that when produced the name of the cashier was left blank.
The note has the printers ident. in the margin at the bottom of the note as Bradbury Wilkinson Y Cie. Grabadores, New Malden, Surrey, Inglaterra.
This is a superb example of an iconic banknote, the note has seen no circulation, it has a tiny corner turn at the top right therefore it grades almost Uncirculated.
The note has a high catalogue value, this note is almost Unc as it has a tiny corner turn. Examples, some not in anything like the condition of this note are sold on eBay from £10 up to more than double this amount!
