General Holland McTyeire ''Howlin Mad'' Smith [1882 1967] was a general of the United States Marine Corps Army general who is referred to as the ''father of U.S. amphibious warfare'' and nicknamed ''Howlin Mad'' Smith by his troops. He began his military career in 1905 and was a veteran of the Philippine- American War, the Banana Wars and World War I. During World War II, he is noted for commanding at the Saipan Tinian and Guam. After the war he served as the Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps. Listed for auction is the autograph of General Holland Smith signed on a First Day Issue commemorative cover. The autograph is signed ''H.M. Smith Gen Marines Retired'' in black pen. The cover measures 6.50 x 3.50 inches, with trivial toning/edge wear otherwise in very good condition. The autograph is an authentic and is a nice example of this legendary U.S. Marine commander. We have listed a nice collection of military, early aviation, explorers and astronaut autographs.
