Portrait of: FITZ HENRY WARREN , of Iowa, born in Brimfield, Hampden County, Mass., on the 11th of January, 1816.
In the summer of 1863 General Warren's name was brought prominently
forward in the Union Convention for the office of Governor of Iowa. In
the fall of the same year he was sent to New Orleans, whence he was
ordered to Matagorda Island , and assigned to a brigade command. Soon
after this he succeeded General Washburne in command of the First
Division 13th Army Corps, which was stationed near Indianola, Texas. In
June, 1864, he was given a District Command in Louisiana, with
headquarters at Baton Rouge. In the following summer, his health having failed, he was relieved from
command, and finally, in consideration of this fact, was placed on duty
in New York City, where he served until the close of the war.
