Congolese painter.
He is considered one of the five founders of Congolese painting, which did not
exist before 1940. Biography Eugène Malonga was born on January 28, 1930 in
Nko, a village located about twenty kilometers from Brazzaville in a poor
family. His father died when he was only 4 years old and all his life he would
keep no image or memories of his beloved father, because just after his death
his paternal family burned all that was of him.
He took his first steps alongside his mother, but following his mother's second
marriage, he joined his paternal uncle in the fourth district of Brazzaville
(Moungali) and spent his childhood there.
From a very early age Eugène Malonga stood out in his neighborhood for his
drawings made on white mats or on white T-shirts, it was then that his uncle
who lived from sewing bought him his first watercolor palette.
At the age of 10 he drew his first painting: “my uncle Boundzoumou's hut.”
He perfected his skills at the School of Painters in Poto-Poto, founded in 1951
by Pierre Lods.
In 1961, Malonga obtained a six-month scholarship for the National School of
Decorative Arts where, after a test, he was placed directly in the fourth year
(the year of leaving).
Among the decisive meetings, it is worth mentioning that of Roger Erell,
architect of the Sainte-Anne du Congo basilica in 1945, who introduced him to
drawing, and that of Gaspard de Mouko, painter of Cameroonian origin, in the
1940s.
Malonga exhibits his works since 1954 quite regularly, once a year. He
exhibited in West Africa (Dakar, Djamena) but much more in Central Africa
(Brazzaville, Libreville, Bangui and Kinshasa).
His work includes many landscapes and some portraits. His favorite motifs are
landscapes and genre scenes, with an evolution towards semi-abstraction.
In the last ten years he returned to realism, his favorite style.
Although his country still needed him to continue to showcase the beauty of its
landscapes and to promote Congolese art through his remarkable talent, Eugene
Malonga died in 2005 at the age of 75 from cardiac arrest. Exhibitions 1954-First exhibition (in Madingou, Republic of
