Calamansi Germination and Seedling Care
Fill a small container with a mixture of 1/2 peat moss and 1/2 sand or perlite.
Sow the calamansi seeds in early spring, about 1/2 inch deep in the container. Sow several seeds in the container, depending on its size, to increase the success rate. Space the seeds about 3 inches apart.
Water the seeds until the soil feels moist, but not soaking wet. Stop watering if water drips from the drainage holes. Cover the container with plastic wrap for moisture retention. Water again whenever the soil feels dry.
Keep the calamansi seeds at 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Germination occurs within three to six weeks. At that time, take off the plastic wrap.
Put the calamansi seedlings in bright, but indirect, sunlight. Allow them to grow a few sets of leaves. Continue watering whenever the soil feels dry.
Fill 4- to 6-inch containers with sterile potting soil. Plant the calamansi seedlings individually in the containers.
Apply diluted potassium fertilizer to the seedlings once every two to four weeks. Mix 2 ounces of potassium fertilizer with 1 quart of water per acre of trees for a foliar spray. Spray the tops and bottoms of all the tree's leaves. For a soil application, dilute 8 ounces of fertilizer in 4 quarts of water per acre of trees.
Taper off and stop fertilizing as winter arrives or when the tree goes dormant. The tree is dormant when it stops putting out new growth, or when growth slows considerably.
Give the calamansi seedlings four hours of direct sunlight per day. The seedlings need temperatures between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit to thrive.
