For all textile enthusiasts , we just know...WOW !!!~ A museum quality find , simply breathtaking!! A masterpiece ~ this quilt dates from the early 19th century, c1805 with some earlier 18th century fabrics used in the piecing~ this quilt / coverlet uses fabric from India , hand block printed borders ~ printed in a wonderful and very rare , palmtree and monument pattern~ this runs all along the side borders. The notches at the top were designed to slip around the wooden bed pole ~ The fabric for the patchwork is a combination of English and Indian fabrics and almost certainly a few French hand block prints also. However, my feeling is that it was assembled in England perhaps using fabrics from the woman's travels. ~ a very romantic notion. This quilt is 100% hand stitched and hand quilted ~ The backing is a fabulous, medium nubby very densely woven homespun linen and cotton blend. It's developed the most wonderful warm aged tone ~ This textile is a treasure, worthy of any museum or private collection ~

MEASUREMENTS: The very top edge measures 58 inches across. The width from side to side ( at the widest ) measures 104 inches . The length from the bottom edge to the notched corner is 83 inches . The top panel ( above the notches measures 23 inches long ~ ~

CONDITION: This textile is in as found condition. It's in REMARKABLE condition. There is so little to report. There are no holes, very little if any fragmenting of the fabrics! There are some pale marks, the backing has some marks and some light staining ~ I would say condition commensurate with age and use, however I feel it was perhaps not used~ it it was used, it was used for very little time ~ a rare gem!
