Background To issue: Cocos (Keeling) Islands is in the eastern Indian Ocean, near the western edge of the Pacific. Its remote location at the interface of the Pacific and Indian Oceans and the expanse between Cocos and Indonesia are fundamental to the composition of its marine life; while it is composed of many species common to the Indo-West Pacific, it is also home to many that do not occur elsewhere in the Indian Ocean.
