A truly fascinating and informative work documenting the research and eventual acquisition of the amazing collection of children’s books and related materials from Elisabeth Ball’s library which were donated to Indiana University’s Lilly Library by the George and Frances Ball Foundation. Some examples from the collection include, Kate Greenaway’s Mother Goose in proof state inscribed by the artist, two of Charles Lamb’s individual tales from Shakespeare, a first edition of Christopher Smart’s Hymns for the Amusement of Children, A Compleat History of the Life and Marvelous Actions of Tom Thumb, and the only known copy of a 1771 printing of the Renowned History of Giles Gingerbread. In addition to the 8500 books and over 1200 manuscripts directly related to the children’s book collection, Miss Ball had more than 4000 nonjuvenile titles, including a copy of William Blake’s Book of Job.
