Quote from inner flap of dust jacket:

...
Through confined to the great Dakota
reservation in 1878, the still-defiant Sioux
did not end their struggle with the white
man until well into the twentieth century.
Throughout the last decades of the nine-
teenth century the Sioux - finding them-
selves united for the first time in their
history - waged a cold war with the United
States Department of the Interior, the
Indian Bureau, the various Indian agents
sent to supervise Sioux Reservation life,
and the so-called Indian Friends of the
East, who sought to "school and church"
the Sioux into submission.
"The story of those years has in it much
of foolishness, a good sprinkling of down-
right wickedness, some noble actions, and
a goodly count of lessons hardly learned
and, too often, quickly forgotten."  Thus
George E. Hyde concludes his account of
the years of crisis and transition between
the Battle of the Little Bighorn and the
first disaster at Wounded Knee.  The Sioux
were making their last stand against the
overwhelming cultural and economic forces
that were closing in upon them.  A dis-
placed people, they had been transplanted
to the reservation from their native home-
lands and told to farm unarable land;  to
change their entire cultural, economic,
and spiritual habits;  and to transform
themselves from warriors to plowmen,
from regal chiefs to day laborers.  At the
same time they were forced to deal with
callous exploiters, corrupt government of-
ficials, and the emerging tycoons of the
West, who wished to "help" the Sioux by
robbing them of their reservation lands.
It is no wonder that the Indians took refuge
in the mystic ghost-dance religion.
