Rare, functioning hand-crafted French Napoleonic surveyors compass from the 18th century- (Early inverted image telescope). Complete with jeweled pivot, half-blued steel needle, mahogany rectangular alidade, with brass spotting scope attached. Features a 7 inch square boxed compass, 5 inch diameter dial, with needle-locking mechanism. Mounted on a handsome custom, turned mahogany display stand, with original sliding lid. Lid features makers mark in French (paste down paper label). Eight point compass rose, 16 cardinal points on paper dial. Silver outer ring in 1 degree increments. Original glass face. Compass mounted on gimbled brass knuckle.
