A stunning intricately carved mug sgraffitto design, handmade in Michigan by renowned ceramic artist Pat Cowan of ZEMYCK. From the artist...Pat M. Cowan
"This lovingly handcrafted stoneware mug fits perfectly in the hand and would make a great gift for someone else or to treat yourself to something special for your morning coffee or tea.

This carved mug is wheel thrown by me in my pottery studio. It is decorated using a process called Sgraffito (in Italian "to scratch"). This is a decorating pottery technique produced by applying layers of color or colors (underglazes or colored slips) to leather hard pottery and then scratching or carving off parts of the layer(s) to create contrasting images, patterns and texture to reveal the clay color underneath. On this piece I carved a leaf motif around the cup.

This pottery ware is made from stoneware and is fired to a mid range temperature. I do all of my own slipping, painting, carving, glazing and firing.

Food Safety: I use only food safe chemicals in my glaze materials. Lead is never used in any aspect of the pottery process.

Please enjoy. For all of my pottery, I spend quite a bit of time throwing, painting and/or carving each one and hope that the users have many years of enjoyment from each piece."
