Legend to the illustrations:
 All these miniatures are reproduced in their original sizes. The remarkable disposition of the main motif in example n° 1, which depicts one half of an ornamental frame (the other half being omitted for reasons of space), represents a window frame with a rolled silk blind originally used as a setting for a miniature half-length portrait of an Indian nobleman. This style of ornamental framing for miniature portraits is quite typical. No.  2, 3, 4 and 5 are paintings on manuscripts, each displaying a main motif bounded by borders. These ornamentations have the same characteristics as fabric decorations. The borders look like braids, while the large traceries resemble white piping, appliqued on embroidered grounds. The running pattern shown in n° 6 is a form of engraved and painted decoration found on a horn.
