This is a vintage antique sample of barbed wire fencing.   This sample features an Andrew J. Upham patent, dated July 18, 1882. This wire is called "Upham's Four Point Double Staple Loop and Lock Barb" by collectors. (ref Hagemeier 609-B).   This wire features two round line wires twisted together.  Barbs are four pointed made from two staple shaped wires. First barbing wire has two points bent away from each other.  Second staple has one leg placed straddling outside of line wires with one leg between line wire and center of first barbing wire.  Legs of second barb are bent across first barb in a clinched loop.    Wire sample is 18" in length and has three barbs.     Barbs are well spaced, and cut is well centered. Wire shows heavy oxidation.  There is some bending of points, but no broken or missing barbs.
